The Summer of ’68..

July 30, 2015

Photographer husband and wife team, Pirkle Jones and Ruth-Marion Baruch, entered the San francisco scene in the 60’s- a very chaotic time in history. After getting her Black Panther photographic essay approved by the De Young Museum in San Francisco, Baruch immediately reached out to Kathleen and Eldridge Cleaver (then minister of information of The Black Panthers) for permission to photograph them.

After the first few photographs, the couple then gained inside access to the party and its inner circle- presenting a depiction of the group that contrasted with the usual negative light in which they were perceived.

Visit the Norton Museum between July 30th and November 29th to see the images that capture one of the most turbulent times in American history!
